BOARD SUMMARY – Board met 25th June 2019
• President will be having teleconference with HQ and other associations Wednesday 26th June 2019 and this is part of Hockey Qld trying to engage with regional associations relating to future issues.
• School Girls review is almost complete and noted that generally a successful event. The issue relating to playing the women’s A Grade has been addressed and CHA staff had to undertake the majority of the duties and this left us short in other areas with some issues raised by members – not being able to contact the office – CHA was short staffed and this is an ongoing challenge with events – financial result will be positive with final P/L available in July.
• President reported on the Saints Lights Opening to the Board and congratulated Saints Hockey Club and their committees on this achievement.
• Event Plan Under 13 has been shared with clubs and committees and advised working hard to recruit volunteers and work with clubs – continue to provide ongoing reports – disappointing HQ does not prioritize an opening ceremony and will share this with HQ in due course
• Board has asked to open Lake Street gate on Saturday mornings when games are being played on the grass fields across the road – forward advices to junior committee/staff and clubs
• Competition and Planning 2020 main issues for next meeting
• Discuss having the buggy to go around and sell drinks to members John Watts has volunteered to assist with this
• Discussing $143K funding for improvements aligned to old clubhouse. Board has confidence in how Facility Management will discuss and provide some direction and then maybe a joint meeting to discuss. Facility Management meeting next meeting after school holidays
• Final reporting being completed for $2.7m funding and final reports will be shared in due course
• Board confirmed strong financial position
• Detailed discussion around insurance and updated to include new improvements.
• Detailed discussion on Aspire Program and the impact of the expanded funding in relation to CHA and the benefits CHA will receive and the Aspire Program funding outcomes

New Funding 2019-2020 – NQPHN
Cairns Hockey has been successful in receiving new funding in the health promotion space. I attach the following outcomes the funding will drive. This funding begins 1st July 2019.
Actions include
• Highly Visible Awareness Campaign designed to attract the attention of our membership and visitors to our facility to promote conversations around reducing the stigma, increasing the knowledge and understanding of mental health and its impact and recognizing the warning signs and finally providing opportunities to seek assistance and support
• Highly Visible Awareness Campaign designed to attract the attention of our membership and visitors to our facility and promote a social all abilities program designed to recruit inactive parents/family members and FIND THEIR 30
• Upskilling programs min 20 coaches and officials across all clubs being part of this training.
• Upskilling programs min of 10 indigenous leaders- part of the LEARN WELL LIVE WELL LEAD WELL program to take part in this training.
• Produce a video for value adding resources, promotion and future program support including both the mental health and the finding your 30 case studies
• Obtain feedback through a series of surveys and interviews on how the awareness campaign has impacted and measure the level of understanding of mental health literary before and after the program and formulate a support strategy for the hockey community moving forward
Matt Cook has returned from his 15months professional development leave advancing his hockey coaching and development skills and experience and Matt returns to assist CHA/Clubs plan this program for 2019-2020. Matt will be assisting Operations Manager in other duties including
(i) Implementing Team App
(ii) Academy Review and Refresh
(iii) Promotion/media support
(iv) Under 13 event support
This is an example of how we try and use grant funding to benefit CHA as well as deliver the grant funders outcomes. In this case there is a significant focus on the building of club capacity and recruitment. We hope we can encourage clubs to be part of the competition and club development conversation after the 2019 competition reviews are completed so we can value add using these types of funding avenues. Finding your 30 is a program to find 30 minutes of physical activity a day and as part of that challenge – new social programs would like to be explored for those inactive parents who might come to Cairns Hockey and watch their children – also walking Hockey could be included in this. if your club has any ideas- please send through to ops@cairnshockey.com.au
SATURDAY 6TH JULY WORKING BEE – GETTING THE FACILITY READY FOR STATE UNDER 13 CHAMPS
• 26 TEAMS/ 400 PLUS PLAYERS AND OVER 1000 PEOPLE PER DAY ACROSS THE FACILITY
• 3 CAIRNS TEAMS COMPETING
• GAMES START 7.50AM AND LAST GAME STARTS 5.05PM
We are seeking volunteers to help us erect tents/ do some last minute gardening and cleaning and generally making the facility the best it can be.
If you can assist, please come along and let us know if possible and we will have some refreshments available. Start time 9.30am

- 26 teams competing over 4 days

Competition 2019-2020
• Board is reviewing 2019 season at its next board meeting.
• Competitions committee is presently undertaking reviews as well
• Clubs are invited to send through any feedback to ops@cairnshockey.com.au on current competition and this will be tabled at the July Board Meeting.
• Reminder that clubs feedback on junior competition/recruitment is also required
• Seeking dates for competition workshop for 2020 in September/October – please let us your view on a workshop in September or early October 2019.
Representative Team Program
• Over the next 2 weeks we have 8 teams attending state championships
• Thanks to all volunteer managers and coaches and thanks to CHA staff for assisting in this program directly and through the preparation stages
• We have over $150K of expenses being managed across this period for rep travel alone and this relates to only 4 teams as Under 18 boys are in Townsville and Under 13 girls are in Cairns and don’t factor into these costs. In some years these program expenses can exceed $250K. We manage this through our cash flow budgeting etc.
General Information
• Just a friendly reminder to all clubs to turn off the lights on Reef Turf when training is completed. They are no longer programmed to turn off automatically
• We are noticing some graffiti around the place – so keep an eye out for people looking like they should not be on premises.
• If you use the training rooms – please be sure to lock them after use on a training night and please keep them clean. On a competition day – try to tidy up after your teams use them.
We have $143K to do some upgrade of amenities and facility under the old clubhouse – we are looking for feedback on any ideas you might have for this area. Facility Management will be taked to consider options but if clubs have any comment or opinion – let us know
The office will be open regular working hours next week but please note during the Under 13 Championship – the answer machine will be turned on and we will be checking during Monday 8th Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th July 2019. Urgent matters ring Julie’s mobile 0418880147
Next week David McNeil will be in Tweed Border with Under 18 Girls as mentor coach and Wes Ferns will be Townsville as coach of Under 18 Boys. Jayden is on leave with Under 21 preparation and training and Under 21 National Championships. The following week Wes will be in Toowoomba as mentor coach with the Under 13 Boys team and David McNeil will be coaching Cairns 1 at state titles in Cairns and mentoring other 2 teams. Lisa Fatnowna is also assistant coach Cairns 1 team. Matt Cook will be working Monday1st July 2019 and will be in Cairns for Under 13 and will be available while David and Wes is away.
- Hockey Qld reps are coming up 7th July 2019 and 8th July 2019 and I will be having a series of meetings with them on Wednesday and Thursday and maybe unavailable during that time otherwise I will be in available if required.
- CHA will be updating the Blue Card Register in July and will send the updated register to all clubs for noting. Thanks to all clubs for their ongoing support to this responsibility to our young people
- After calling for nominations, there was only 2 people interested in Indoor Hockey Committee for 2019. Please ask your membership if anyone might want to be interested and pass along details to ops@cairnshockey.com.au
